Two front doors, the rocking chairs and the swings on the long front porch distinguish the Greek Revival style Harmony House Inn Bed and Breakfast in New Bern's historic district. The original part of the house was built sometime around 1850; additions and porches appeared later. Around 1900, the house was sawed in half, the west side moved nine feet west to accommodate a new hallway and staircase. The inn now has seven guest rooms and three suites, all furnished with antiques and homemade crafts. Two of the suites have heart-shaped Jacuzzis, and all rooms have private baths and decorative fireplaces as well as free high-speed Internet access.
A full breakfast (which may include house specialties such as stuffed French toast with homemade blueberry maple syrup; cheese strata; potato, bacon and cheese casserole; or homemade coffeecake) is served each morning in the dining room. Another Harmony House specialty, the Toffee Bar Coffeecake, was featured in the December 1999 issue of Bon Appetit. Owners Ed and Sooki Kirkpatrick host a social hour each evening, offering wine and cheese or other hors d'oeuvres. The Harmony House holds awards as best Best Bed and Breakfast by the Sun-Journal Readers' Choice voters. The bed and breakfast has also been featured on the PBS show "Carolina Weekends" and holds a three diamond rating from AAA.
