With the addition of the new North Carolina History Center, Tryon Palace has reinvented itself as an experience with choices. Originally built between 1767 and 1770, Tryon Palace housed two Royal Governors and subsequently five elected state governors. Both planning and legislative sessions took place in the building after the American Revolution. Rebuilt in 1959 from its original plans after being destroyed by fire in 1798, the palace is furnished with antiques and artifacts appropriate to the period re-created, and history tours with live dramatizations of real events keep schoolchildren and adults returning year after year to take part in new lessons. Now, the experience is divided into four sections: the Palace, the gardens, the History Center and Historic Homes. The new North Carolina History Center offers interactive learning experiences for all ages with the most up-to-date electronic virtual tours in the state. Admission is through the North Carolina History Center on South Front Street. Hours are Monday through Saturday 9 AM to 5 PM and Sunday noon to 5 PM.
