Finding a new pet with the spaying or neutering complete and rabies shots up to date is as simple as visiting the Craven-Pamlico Animal Services Center in New Bern. Further, because of a terrific partnership of the Craven County Environmental Health Department with Craven Correctional Institution called New Leash for Life, four dogs are provided to inmates every eight weeks for them to provide the dogs with basic house training, behavior and socialization skills for the benefit of new owners. Adoption can be completed through Pals for Paws, an affiliated service, and can be preceded by time with the prospective pet in a play place at the shelter, to be sure of a good owner-pet fit.
The greatest percentage of pets at the shelter have been left there by owners no longer able to care for animals, but the mission at Animal Services includes finding suitable homes for stray as well as unwanted animals. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturday 10 AM to 3 PM.
