Fishing in New Bern, NC

Although many anglers prefer fishing in the deeper waters of the Crystal Coast, New Bern, NC is filled with plenty of creeks, rivers, bays, piers and shore fishing options. Whether dropping nets in the river for bait, motoring into the Neuse for flounder and crabs or chartering an experienced captain for more adventurous endeavors, New Bern fishermen are never far from a place to test their luck.

What's Biting

Fly fishing, shore fishing, party boat or solitary, anyone can purchase a license and fish in and near New Bern. From boat or pier, anglers expect to hook bass, bream, flounder and drum in local waters. The Neuse River is also home to various crabs, providing tasty and profitable rewards. Nearby Croatan National Forest permits freshwater and saltwater fishing; however, fishing in the forest's freshwater lakes is poor because of the water's acidity. Along the river shoreline, oystering, crabbing and flounder-gigging are worthwhile pursuits. Any ranger at the ranger office at 141 Fisher Avenue, 9 miles south of New Bern just off U.S. Highway 70 E, can provide maps and fishing advice. The office is open weekdays from 8 AM to 4:30 PM.

Several forest locations have fishing piers and boat ramps, including Brices Creek, Cahooque Creek, Catfish Lake, Great Lake and Haywood Landing. Again, rangers are happy to provide specific directions. (For more information on places to fish in the park, see our New Bern Sports, Fitness and Parks.)
