New Bern, NC isn't the largest city in North Carolina, but it's certainly too big for you to get here and get around without your planning some form of transportation. Offering plenty of hourly flights from Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, as well as a Greyhound bus stop, taxis, car rentals and trolleys, New Bern's transit is based primarily on private businesses and is absent of any form of public transportation. Luckily, there are plenty of businesses that are happy to fill that gap with courteous door-to-door service and quick pick-ups via dispatched calls.
Being a town that was once North Carolina's state capital, it should come as no surprise that there are many ways in and out of New Bern. However, as time marched on there were two primary paths that emerged as the most popular: Highways 17 and 70.
Reaching New Bern from north or south via U.S. Highway 17 brings visitors through or around coastal cities and national historic areas. Interstate 95 brings eastbound travelers to U.S. Highway 70 with exits leading into the downtown historic district and onto U.S. 17 N. and the hospital or to Glenburnie Road and Craven Community College. From Morehead City, driving west along U.S. 70 brings the visitor to newer shopping areas first. The spectacular Neuse River Bridge amazes first-time visitors from east and south. Curving to intersect with the span over the Trent River into New Bern, the main highway rises to 65 feet over the Neuse. Replacing the single drawbridge, the 10-year-old structure cut commuter time into New Bern by half when drivers no longer had to stop for river traffic right-of-way. A new drawbridge now replaces The Alfred Cunningham Bridge, once spanning the Trent River to connect downtown with the Neuse River Bridge and U.S. 70. This quick connection right off of U.S. 70 is a major gateway to downtown, with Union Point Park on the right and the New Bern Riverfront Convention Center on the left.
Flying in and out of New Bern is also a popular option for visitors and residents alike. The Coastal Carolina Regional Airport, located just across the bridge in James City, offers flights on US Airways and Delta that connect travelers to virtually any destination they wish. Because of its size, this convenient airport also offers affordable parking and shorter lines for ticketing and security.
